My role.

As the sole product designer on this initiative, I owned the design process end-to-end across three products: the website, the mobile app, and the agent portal. The work spanned stakeholder workshops to align on goals, benchmark research, customer-journey mapping, and the full design loop from ideation through wireframes to final interfaces β€” with a deep dive into the new renters insurance product.

Impact.

The redesign of Kanguro's digital ecosystem directly contributed to the successful launch of their renters insurance product. The new user and agent experiences not only met but exceeded key performance indicators.

100+ renters policies sold in the first month
220% usage and conversion rate for the agent portal
25% less clicks to make a sale
10,000+ policies sold over the span of two years after launch

Design method.

The overall design philosophy used during the project was one of embracing fast deliveries and fast iterations. We opted to release the features in the minimal viable version so we could get feedback directly from the end-users.

This process proved to be very efficient and aligned with the expectations of the stakeholders. It allowed the team to deliver the product much faster and Kanguro to obtain financial return much quicker.

Once the strategic foundation was set, I moved into a full-scale redesign of Kanguro's core platforms: the public-facing website, the customer mobile app, and the internal agent portal.

The website.

The primary goal of the website redesign was to drastically simplify the user journey, making it exceptionally easy for customers to get a quote and purchase renters insurance. For that I designed a streamlined, multi-step quoting process that guided users from a single entry point to a successful purchase in just a few clicks.

The quoting process was the most complex and most important of the whole website. It demanded careful planning of the user journey through each step of the way, since this was the moment the user effectively became a Kanguro client. We designed two separate but similar quoting flows, one for each of the Kanguro insurance products, with intensive iterations to reduce the amount of clicks and data to the minimum necessary.

With the institutional pages, the quoting process and a simple dashboard for the client to check their active policies, I designed over 100 screens, covering both desktop and mobile, ensuring a responsive and seamless experience for all users β€” and this huge work yielded immediate and powerful results: over 100 renters insurance policies sold in the first month after launch.

The mobile app.

Kanguro mobile app β€” onboarding, renters policy summary, and home dashboard

The mobile app is the central hub for Kanguro customers to manage their policies and file claims. In addition to redesigning the core UX/UI, I infused the Kanguro brand with new visual life with custom illustrations and motion graphics to maintain the brand's youthful, approachable spirit. I also redesigned key functionalities like filing claims and document submission, focusing on clarity and a friction-free experience.

Renters policy detail screens β€” coverage, additional coverage, billing and payment

The biggest challenge in redesigning the app was incorporating the Renters insurance product seamlessly, while not altering β€” and even improving β€” the existing Pet insurance experience for current users.

This was achieved with a careful rework of the main menu β€” relying on user data about the most accessed areas of the app and rounds of tests with clients, I decided which pages should be higher on the app's hierarchy.

I also redesigned the claims flow β€” the main task the user performs on the app, which is done via a chatbot interaction β€” laying down all the possible actions and outcomes the user can achieve in the process: a careful and necessary work for the success of the product.

I led a big effort to update and revamp the app's design system. I led sessions with the mobile devs to align on the best practices to componentize, name and organize all of the design tokens we would need to make the project easier for developers and, even more important, scalable β€” so Kanguro could be prepared to add even more new features in the future as they planned.

Mobile design system β€” colors, spacing, typography, and component library

Kanguro has a very bright and quirky brand, filled with saturated colors, scribbles and illustrations to make it approachable, personal and fun. For that reason, I incorporated a lot of joyful illustrations and animations into the website and app.

The internal platform.

Kanguro agent portal β€” active customers dashboard with policy and quote management

The agent portal is a critical tool for Kanguro's sales team. The goal was to transform a previously slow and cumbersome quoting process into a quick and easy-to-use tool that would empower agents to sell more policies. By redesigning the quoting and sales journey for agents, eliminating unnecessary steps and simplifying complex data entry, we reduced the number of clicks to convert a sale by 25%. Agents praised the new experience for being "so much faster and easier," which directly led to increased usage and conversion rates.

Reflection.

Kanguro taught me how much a single, well-aligned design system can carry. By front-loading the system work and embracing a fast-iteration philosophy, we shipped three connected products without rebuilding the foundation each time. The deeper lesson was about audience β€” when you design for a community that's often underserved by mainstream digital products, every decision quietly compounds. Clarity, warmth, and respect aren't extras; they're the product.
